The talk show queen and philanthropist from Mississippi, Oprah Winfrey, received an honorary doctrine from Harvard Thursday. She described the recognition as defining milestone in a very long and blessed journey. Her approach to the event was one of motivation to be the best you. It is one thing to try to figure out what the world needs but it is best to find what brings you alive.
The day in Cambridge was also special for the graduates as she was the keynote speaker later that day at Harvard’s 362nd commencement. Oprah talked about her illustrious career and her new venture the OWN network. Before her invitation to be the speaker at the commencement she was dealing with finding strength in her life decisions. When one thinks of Oprah we see power, strength and determination. At the time of her network launch there was doubt about her business decision. But only as Oprah can she described that after 35,000 interviews she realizes that all people want from President Barack Obama to Beyoncé and all her “Beyoncé-ness” is to be understood and validated.
Her delivery of understanding your purpose on this Earth and finding the right platform to do so was truly inspirational. The speech touched on being a part of a network of ANGELS and realizing that there is more that unifies us than separates us. Her examples of people looking pass the darkness and the way media portrays humanity to realizing that there is light inside us all was a charge to Harvard grads that day and to us all to find our calling, share what we know and give what we can!
