Ok, so it’s no secret that Riccardo Tisci’s departure from Givenchy came out of nowhere, literally, and he and his creative work will truly be missed. In fact, the abrupt news of his parting is still fresh on the minds of many fashion fans to date. However, with that being said his 12 year legacy with the luxury fashion house will forever live on inside the met galas years to come. In other news, Givenchy is now on the hunt to replace Tisci and his creative intake, but guess who’s name is being tossed into the mix?
Virgil Abloh Could Be Givenchy’s Choice for Creative Director after Riccardo Tisci.
According to WWD, Virgil Abloh’s name is being thrown in the mix of a possible fit for the brand. As far as a word from the luxury house, a Givenchy spokesperson declined to comment about Abloh being a possible choice. Abloh also refused to comment as well, but on the other hand, he did comment once before of hopefully heading a “leading luxury house.” Virgil states, “My trajectory is to update and provide something new in the fashion industry by way of creating a project and using it as a case study on how to update a luxury house,” he told WWD.
To more so intensify conjecture, WWD brought back a statement that Abloh once told them about his street style brand Off-White being a catalyst for something greater. “I have a litany of ideas that bring modern relevance, but also a financial vision on how these brands can be more successful in the space of luxury,” he told WWD in a past interview. “Off-White is sort of my résumé and it’s my laboratory to experiment with these ideas to see which ones are valid.”
More evidence which points out towards Abloh direction, reported by WWD is that LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, owner of Givenchy, already had its eye on Abloh when he won the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers. On top of that, let’s not forget Tisci and Abloh were both nominated for a Grammy for the packaging work for Kanye and Jay Z’s album, Watch the Throne. All lanes are leading towards Abloh! Is it too early to say congratulations? 2017 may be the year of the underdog. Big ups to Abloh! Your dope for reading.
