People are snapping photos and updating their statuses, encouraging others and sharing their personal views on current news and hot topics. Social media over the last 5 years has become an official form of communication. No one anticipated social media would take off so quickly, almost like a wild fire. Social media’s quick growth has hindered the companies from keep up with the ever-changing requirements.
Social Media Guidelines
According to popular social media platform Instagram’s Community guidelines:
“Instagram was intended to be an authentic and safe place for inspiration and expression.”
While many use social media to inspire others. Social media has also allowed people to communicate with people that they would have only dreamed of. This communication on social media opened the door for people to express their opinions both positively and negatively. We have all seen the comments that people make on the statuses of public figures. We anxiously await their responses also referred to as a “clap backs.”
The guidelines for social media platforms are vague as it relates to censoring comments. Should social media platforms have scripts setup to track keywords and trigger a review prior to allowing someone to post? While social media provides positive value, there are still some negative elements that need to be worked out. Not only do public figures face scrutiny on social media, so does the high school student that is the center of attention to a bully. Or the average person that may live life outside the box of the social norms, and because of their lifestyle, they are the target of reticle.
According to the 1st amendment, one’s freedom of speech shall not be prohibited. However, where do we draw the line? While we have made many strides in the advancement of social media. We still have a long way to go to make social media a safe environment for inspiration and expression.
