Notorious Canadian-based bag company, Herschel, has announced that they are going to launch a clothing line. Herschel is known for its stylish bags. The companies modern versions of the classic backpack are very popular. As of today, the company has sold over 15 million bags since its creation.
Herschel started in 2009 when founding brothers Jamie and Lyndon Cormack decided to create the company with no background in manufacturing. They found that the bag market was underserviced. There was a large space for “design-driven bags at a consumer-driven price”, and that’s exactly what the brothers decided to deliver. Herschel dominated the bag market while collaborating with larger brands like Apple and Coca-Cola. They now produce hats, wallets, travel kits, in addition to their signature bags.
Almost ten years later, the brothers are looking to expand their brand. This year, Herschel will release two apparel line, Voyage and Forecast. Voyage will be a packable outerwear line, while Forecast will focus on weather-ready rain gear. Both are still in line with the brand’s travel-minded lifestyle theme. They will be sold at stores that already sell Herschel bags, like Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, and Urban Outfitters.
For the launch, there are three looks for Voyage and two for Forecast. Herschel product designer, Kenta Got, has created a coach’s jacket, an anorak, and a parka for Voyage. He has also made sure that the clothes will be water and wind resistant. For Forecast, he designed a hooded coach’s jacket and a park. These items will come with two-way stretch and heavy duty bonded seams.
All of the pieces are inspired by the late 80s and 90s. There are bird prints based off of rice bags from canal street, Tribe Called Quest inspired tri-color jackets and, a Keith Haring collaboration that will only be available at the launch.
Herschel is also planning to open its first flagship location in Vancouver this year. The space will be designed by Omer Arbel, a designer and sculptor based in Vancouver and Berling. The fully self-funded company will also open a new office in Shanghai. It’s only a matter of time until they have locations in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. They already acquired a showroom in Los Angeles earlier this year. Looks like 2017 is officially the year of expansions.
Voyage and Forecast will launch in July of this year. Prices will range from $69 to $99.
