Hit or Miss? My Take on Gorilla Snot Gel

Hit or Miss? My Take on Gorilla Snot Gel

*Disclaimer: I have 3C/4A hair so what holds well for me may not hold well for other hair textures and vice versa.*

What is Gorilla Snot Gel?

It is a styling gel that is meant to provide extra hold, even for the craziest of hairstyles. I came across this product when I was looking for something that would keep my THICK, curly hair sleek for more than a day & a half.

Gorilla Snot comes in 4 different types, all of which are advertised to provide strong hold (9 out of 10): Punk (orange top), Sport (yellow top), Galan (purple top) and Rockero (blue top).

What’s My Experience with Gorilla Snot Gel?

The two Gorilla Snot Gels I have tried are Punk and Rockero.
Punk was the first one I ever tried and I found that it left a gunky residue in my hair after a few days of applying it my edges. That MAY have something to do with the fact that I had a weave in at the time, but I never experienced that with EcoStyler soooo….yea, that was a dub lol.

I had actually decided to take a break from Gorilla Snot until I had come across Rockero. I was looking for a gel that would keep my edges sleek and NOT leave a gunky residue. Rockero came up so many times as other naturalistas’ go-to product for their edges, so I decided to give Gorilla Snot another try. It’s clear, leaves no residue, lays my edges, and has won my heart.

I want to say that I have used Gorilla Snot for my entire head MAYBE twice. Because it contains alcohol and alcohol is drying, I try not to use any more than absolutely necessary.

The gel itself is thick and VERY sticky. It holds well but I wouldn’t say that it’s better than EcoStyler. I can use EcoStyler all over my head and edges without having to worry about the drying effects and its hold is stronger.

However, I will say that I prefer Gorilla Snot over EcoStyler when it comes to my edges, ESPECIALLY when I have a straight weave in. EcoStyler just curls my edges right up! However, I found that if you apply EcoStyler on top of Gorilla Snot, then you get the hold of EcoStyler and the sleekness of Gorilla Snot.

Soooooo…Hit or Miss?

Well, despite its shortcomings, I declare Gorilla Snot Gel a Hit. Once I decided to use Rockero and use it strictly as edge control, I had no other problems with this product. Just about everyone I know swears by it, especially as an edge control. Also, it’s inexpensive and you get sooooo much for your money. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for sleek edges.
