Hot New R&B Music: Spending ‘Forever’ with Sebastian Mikael

I had the thrill of chatting with the gorgeous rising R&B star Sebastian Mikael about the release of his newest hit single ‘Forever‘, exciting upcoming projects, and of course, a little dishing on his love life and other personal instances.

Sebastian Mikael is getting into his career at the ripe age of 24. Mikael is one of the freshest faces of R&B so I wanted to know, who is Sebastian Mikael in your own words? That’s a good question”, he replied. “I don’t know, I’m from Sweden originally. I’m an R&B singer. My sound is very soulful and chill.” The only thing I thought he may have forgotten in speaking on who he was, is how fine he is.

What’s a typical day in life for you? “I’m either on the road or in the studio. Every day is routine, basically. We’re moving around if we’re not in the studio–picking out art, working on visuals… always being creative. Coming up with ideas, you know what I mean?” It’s obviously a lot of work being a recording artist, especially when you’re as fresh in the game as Sebastian Mikael. What’s your favorite thing to do when you do get a moment of down time? I enjoy doing all of the things I have to do regularly, so even when I have down time I take up some art to find inspiration. I love fashion as well so I like to shop, you know, just trying to stay inspired even on my off time. How admirable is that?

When I say the word music where does your mind go from there? It’s art. It’s a tool to express yourself in the way you want to express yourself. No boundaries, no limits. Something that I personally feel is natural to all of us.” One of my favorite covers was the one you did of Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On?’ It was very soulful and heartfelt, which always makes for good R&B. Who would you consider your go-to ‘Morning Music’ artists? Sade, Marvin Gaye, ColdPlay.. just to name a few.

Sebastian Mikael premiered the video for his newest hit single ‘Forever’ on BET’s 106 & Park. The song has a beautiful story in it. So of course, I just had to know if ‘Forever‘ was based on a personal event. “When I moved from Sweden to the States, I was in a relationship which had been going on for 3 years, so it was hard to just up and move to America. I couldn’t stay though. I couldn’t let the opportunity pass me by because it was an opportunity for me to pursue my dream. I had to leave her because of that. At the same time I wanted people to be able to relate to that and it be encouraging for them. That’s the reason I decided on that topic. Also, that soulful sound was something I feel was missing from the game, so we decided to bring that sound back with ‘Forever’.

Following your dreams is definitely one of the most fulfilling, but intimidating feelings one might ever have. We can clearly see some of the sacrifices that come with pursuing your dreams in the Sebastians love story that inspired his latest single. Does most of your music come from your personal experiences? “Yeah, I think every song comes from a real experience. Even if it is isn’t all from my experience, I’m often inspired by other people’s experiences. You hear their experiences and you can relate. You can be inspired from everything. That’s where I pull all my ideas from, but at the same time if I can’t touch on it and relate to it–and actually feel it myself… then when I’m writing it, it won’t be as honest. It’s gotta be a real experience for me to get into it, you know.”
