Style was in full-effect last night. January 20th has finally come, allowing the country closure after a tumultuous 4 years under the previous administration. Much can be said about the history making presidential inauguration of Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris. With the transition of power finally made, we can take a moment to chat about a lighter and more fashion-oriented topic–the style highlights from the 2020 Inaugural ceremony.
While I loved the majority of what I saw, there were a certain few whose style stood out to me. The 2021 presidential inauguration ceremony was not only a celebration of the future, but a celebration of how far you can go and what can be achieved.
It goes without saying that Kamala Harris was one of the best-dressed, if not the best-dressed person at the inauguration. All of social media was buzzing about the various fashion choices and style choices that we saw. Below is a brief recap of the most fashionable looks from the inauguration ceremony. Its worth mentioning that while senator Bernie Sanders, wasn’t wearing any custom couture, he was spotted wearing gloves that have gone on to become rather famous. The “grumpy-chic” gloves as they’ve been called are made from repurposed sweaters and have been the centerpiece to a ton a memes.
Kamala Harris
Vice-President Harris clearly knows law–and style. Wearing an all-black custom look created by designer Sergio Hudson, Harris looked more chic than I can say. I love her style. During the ceremony she wore a custom coat by Christopher John Rogers and Manolo Blahnik heels.
While we all have our own ideas of who the most stylish First Lady is, Dr. Jill Biden definitely put her best stiletto forward at the inauguration ceremony. The first lady wore a blue custom coat by Markarian. Later we saw her in a purple suit and jacket created by Jonathan Cohen with clutch by Tyler Ellis and shoes from Jimmy Choo.
Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama exemplifies class and stylish sophistication seemingly in all she does. With former-president Donald Trump not attending the January 20th ceremony, it was refreshing to see Michelle and Barak together at the capitol. Michelle wore Stuart Weitzman boots and a piece by the same designer (Sergio Hudson) that created VP. Harris’ outfit.
Demi Lovato
If there’s one thing I love about Demi, its her tenacity and her style. I have a sweet spot for feminine menswear, and the Stella McCartney f/w 2020 RTW suit she wore during her performance was chic and relaxed.
Lady Gaga
One of my favorite things about Lady Gaga is her continued evolution and the fact that she always in some way manages to steal the show. I remember her fledgling-fashionista days of oversized platform pumps and meat-dresses. Lady Gaga always finds a way to happily marry the avant-garde with tact and time-stopping style. Gaga was seen in a custom Schiaparelli ballgown at the inauguration.
