Over the years, Jaden Smith and his sister Willow Smith have been known not only for being the children of actor Will Smith and actress Jada Pinkett-Smith, but also for their funky, unique style and their wise-beyond-their-years way of thinking. Jaden and Willow have a very intriguing way of thinking and their whole philosophy on life is very insightful for young kids their age. Jaden talked a little bit about his style choice with The New York Times back in November: “We [referring to his sister, Willow, and himself] both don’t really care. I like to wear things that I make.”
Jaden’s father Will Smith went in to more detail about his son’s style in an interview with Esquire. Will says that Jaden “has refused to be a slave to money,” claiming that Jaden only has three pairs of pants, five shirts, and one pair of shoes. Will continued:
“Total. He has refused to be a slave to money. I so respect that. The younger generation is less of an ownership generation, anyway. And it’s such an interesting thing to watch, because I came from a middle-class background, but, you know, our lights and gas would be cut off from not paying the bill. I grew up in a house where you would need the kerosene heaters in the winter in case the bills didn’t get paid. And he’s from the complete other end of the spectrum. And it’s so interesting to me that from growing up in that space, he could see the need for things in a way that he’s rejecting. He’s like, ‘I’m not gonna let myself need things in that way’—but I would like him to get another pair of shoes.”
Jaden never ceases to impress us. We can all take a few notes from Jaden.
