That’s right! Our favorite flower child and the “modern-day Sade” is VIBE’s newest cover girl! Jhené shares how she would much rather walk around barefoot and blend in, saying that she’d never be one to go out in flashy accessories, high heels, and a red lip. She’s so down to earth and real. We love that! & we love her just the way she is!
In her cover story, Jhené opens up about her childhood, sharing that she used to be bossed around by her older siblings, which lead to her being, as she put it, a little bitch in her earlier years of school. She talks about her being able to use writing and music as her outlet, with her and her mom recalling that she would always write everything down, doing so as a form of release. She talked about her crazy thoughts, past lovers, her religious journey, family, and more that have influenced her music that we can’t get enough of!
Upon her arrival into the industry, Jhené made it very clear that she was an artist in her own unique lane. In a Tumblr rant back in 2012, she writes: “I AM NOT YOUR NEXT BEYONCE, I AM NOT YOUR NEXT AALIYAH. I AM NOT CASSIE’S COMPETITION, NOR AM I RIHANNAH’S [sic].” Old friends like R&B singer Omarion (Jhené also used to sing the hooks on B2K’s songs) also shared that she’s definitely an artist who will always remain herself, not letting mainstream appeal affect her sound and the type of music that she makes.
We love Jhené and can’t get enough of her music! BTW have you guys heard her new single that she dropped last night To Love and Die ft. Cocaine 80s? LOVE IT!
