A few weeks ago I attended Lex Monroe’s BET Hip Hop Awards gifting suite and was eyeing this t-shirt with a picture of Felicia from the movie Friday and the saying “Bye Felicia” going across. The shirt definitely caught my attention and I had to have it. Let’s get into the tea with the creator of this infamous shirt, Reece, from CatchThatTee.
Connie: How did Catch That Tee (CTT) come about?
Reece: CTT came about because I would go shopping online and in the malls but couldn’t find anything that I liked/wanted. So from there, I decided to make my own shirts and a couple of my friends asked if I could make them some as well. When wearing them out, I would get stopped by people asking where did I get the shirt…when I was at the Essence Festival, people would stop me and just take a picture with me and the shirt. I knew then I had something. I researched different screenprints, formatting and different applications and taught myself how to do those things.
C: Now, CTT is very catchy and clever.
R: (laughs) Yes, it’s a play on words. You know, catch that TEA means catch that truth or shade…dirt. I wanted to change it to TEE because the designs have shade behind them.
C: Do you have other designs besides “Bye Felicia?”
R: I have 30 or so designs but right the “Bye Felicia” shirt is the only one being manufactured. Just trying to figure out when is the best time to have the others produced…3 more designs will be released this month.
C: Do you take request for custom designs?
R: You can request your own design or get embellishments to the shirts already produced.
C: What has been the hardest part of the process?
R: Exposure. Just getting your product out there for the masses to see and making them know it’s out here. If that means putting money upfront or giving away shirts, you have to do what you need to get your brand out there.
Want more inspiration, Reece is an industrial engineer and he is doing it. He stated that he’s always been creative thought out high school and college. He was on the fence about whether or not to do his t-shirt line but followed another one of his dreams. You too can have a career and fulfill a passion that’s deep inside!
