Finesse! Some guys have it, most guys want it, and one, we know for sure, exudes it! Welcome back to the world of Keith Carlos–male supermodel, rising fashion icon, and “Super Dad!” Keith won the hearts and mind of the world when back in 2014, during the twenty-first cycle of America’s Next Top Model (ANTM) when he became the first male winner of the hit competition series. Since then Keith’s life and career has soared to new heights that perhaps not even he could have foreseen.
We definitely thought it was time for an update with Keith and thankfully we were able to grab some of his very busy time. 2018 is nearly halfway done, and Mr. Carlos is pleased with his progress thanks to his own way of getting things done. “I set monthly goals and achieve them. Each of my monthly goals is a step toward my ultimate goal. By doing this, I stay on track and don’t get overwhelmed attempting to immediately achieve long term goals because I work fast.” It is refreshing to see Keith is on his grind. For many of us we opted for a “do over” of 2018 at the close of January!
Even more amazing is his greatest goal, to be an amazing father to his baby boy, Keith Carlos, Jr. Being a great father is an act he is determined to be just as great at as he is a model and winner. Little Keith made his debut in the world in late December and we could not be more excited for the proud papa. Keith seems to have really taken to being a daddy and plans to have another child when Little Keith is a little older. “Being a father is nothing less than amazing. It’s teaching me a new level of patience. I’m also filling a void of always wanting a father in my life to teach me about life and being a man. Now I’m doing just that for my son. I’ll have another son in a year or so once Keith Jr. is running around. Infants are a lot of work and need much attention.”
Keith may have added fatherhood to his list of accomplishments, but he is far from done with the fashion world. He is still a mover and shaker with an opinion on the status quo of the industry and a keen take on what fashion considers “trendy.” “I honestly don’t follow trends. I create my own lane to stand out. History repeats itself with fashion so there is never a right or wrong, just the opinion of the interpreter.” Keith’s take on the current state of fashion does not end there. As we all know traditionally the fashion industry has not been very racially inclusive. Keith feels some of the trends are becoming more inclusive, but their overall representation of people have not. He feels current race relations have affected the fashion industry “…it has affected the fashion industry. I’ve seen Caucasian(s) wearing African print, etc. I hope this isn’t just a trend for now because trends die out. But I hope it becomes more of a lifestyle…” Fashion is so much more than what you wear or how you wear it. Kontrol’s very own editor-in-chief, Julian Lark, coins it best when he states “Fashion is more than labels, it’s a lifestyle, so live it!” With people like making moves in the industry we can be sure that there will be more male models of color working the runways of the world.
Interestingly, we may not be seeing Keith walk any of the fashion weeks this year. In fact, he seems vastly disillusioned with the process. “I personally don’t walk fashion weeks anymore. Designers don’t pay the models enough for me to walk. Plus fashion weeks are more geared to new models trying to make a brand for themselves. However, I am proud to say that my business partner Matthew Stephen Smith and I have been working to create a new “lane”, or movement within the humanitarian realm; we have titled this movement as Role Models. Role Models is an advertisement company that directly connects the entertainment industry to charity, through marketing and does so all under the non-profit umbrella of Make it Happen. Through real world product placement, we not only provide mass marketing to companies and brands we work with, but we do it in a way that truly benefits those in need. It gives our audience a real and meaningful reason to stand behind, or invest in the brands/companies enabling our ventures. Instead of a product being simply useful, through Role Models, we show the world why and how it can be meaningful, truly impacting real people in the real world who need it most. I am excited for the world to not only see what we are providing, but also for those who care to learn how they can participate. No one should ever be told that their efforts do not make an impact, Matthew and I aim to build an interactive platform with an open door for all who wish to walk through it.”
We are definitely looking forward to all of Keith’s new ventures. He continues to prove his might and relevancy in a world that would love to box him in. Whether he is living the life of a supermodel or being an equally amazing father, there is just so much to admire about Keith Carlos. 2018 is far from over and there is still so much left for him to accomplish, but we know he will do it with equal amounts of finesse, determination, and most of all strength. We see you Keith Carlos, and we are loving your rise!
