Is it just us or are lawsuits and celebrities like peanut butter and jelly? Every day it seems we are bombarded with news of some celebrity headed to court, usually over something frivolous. This, however anything with Oprah Winfrey’s name attached to it is never frivolous! Apparently, The Queen of Media, is being sued by Otisa S. Strickland, a woman who claims she stole “Fix My Life” from her.
Otisa has filed a lawsuit claiming Fix My Life is identical to her show concept, The Agency, where a counselor would have traveled abroad helping people fix their issues.
A woman named Otisa C. Strickland says “Iyanla: Fix My Life,” a reality show about life coach and relationship expert Iyanla Vanzant that’s been airing on the Oprah Winfrey Network for five seasons, is a “carbon copy” of a reality show she purportedly created in 2008 called “The Agency.” Strickland writes in her complaint,
The plaintiff brings this action to halt and recover its damages from defendant’s ongoing infringement of its rights to ‘The Agency’. Specifically, plaintiff seeks to stop defendants’ blatant theft of its copyrightable expression.
According to the suit, “The Agency” followed a
counselor that travels all over the nation to people homes to counsel and help people with their problems.
The suit claims that Oprah’s show following Vanzant is “virtually identical”. The complaint also named Oprah’s Harpo Studios production company. The suit continues,
Oprah Winfrey was aware of my identity and she was familiar with the television visions which were on record at the copyright office. She researched my copyrights, and stole my copyrightable expression in an attempt to profit from my gifted and creative mind.
This is all rather ugly, but we doubt Oprah would knowingly steal someone else’s show. Also, why is Otisa just now coming forward with these accusations. The show is on its fifth season and is critically acclaimed. Shouldn’t she have tried to accrue her losses from the jump if this is true? This is really trick ya’ll, but Oprah’s a billionaire–and smart–she’ll figure it out!
