Looks like Dolce & Gabanna wont be the only designer label in the court room now that designer label Louis Vuitton will be settling a Racial Discrimination and Harassment Lawsuit.
The top fashion label is being sued over racial discrimination claims after a manager of a flagship store stated to an African American employee that “Black people are slaves who eat dirt off the floor.”
The sales associate suing Louis Vuitton is Oliver Koffi who worked at the store in central London. Koffi claims that while he was in the stock room packing up a pair of shoes for a customer , he overheard his manger ranting about the African American race. Prior to the black people comment, Koffi alleged that his manager called Barack Obama a “Muppet” and said America would be better off with “Ms.Piggy” as its president because “Muslim people don’t eat pork.” Koffi says that his managers tone was “cold and serious” and also said that “All of his comments were derogatory and a clear illustration of his prejudices towards other races and religions”
Koffi was a contract worker at Louis Vuitton Townhouse at London’s iconic Selfridges department store at the time of the incident. He says he recorded the offensive comments on tape after concerns of the mangers remarks.
Koffi says that later he confronted the manger about the comments expressing how disgusted and offended he was from the remarks. The store manager did not deny the comment but said “It was just a joke”
The store manager has recently left his job after following a disciplinary proceeding. Louis Vuitton accepts that the racist comment was made but defends the claim on the basis the company had taken all reasonably practicable steps to prevent the racist comment.
Recently a spokeswoman for the company stating that “Louis Vuitton has a zero-tolerance policy to harassment of any kind.”
Seems like this isn’t a good year for High Fashion, hopefully Louis Vuitton can get this case and settle equality for employees and customers.
