Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with the beautiful Lynn Whitfield about her latest movie, “King’s Faith.” In this drama, audiences view the internal conflict of a young man, Brendan King, to do the right thing. Throughout this process he is guided by Mike Stubbs (James McDaniel) and eventually accepted by Vanessa Stubbs (Lynn Whitfield). This was a truly powerful movie with a great message – that everyone deserves the opportunity at a second chance.
I had to ask Ms. Whitfield about her experiences on the set of “King’s Faith.” She believed the experience was “gratifying and had a family feel” to it. We briefly touched a great subject, which was what happens to the children who have been in the system and are now adults? Although, Ms. Whitfield has played various and diverse roles, she still noted that every character that she has ever played is different; “they all have their own finger prints,” she stated. Her character, Mrs. Stubbs, is in a dark place in her life because she lost her only son and withdrew from the world. “Everyone deals with death differently and Vanessa chose to withdraw and lost her faith in God.” There a few times throughout the movie where Mrs. Stubbs thinks that Brendan and her husband are trying to “replace” her son, Lewis. One form comfort that Mrs. Stubbs finds after her son’s death is in gardening. Unfortunately, Ms. Whitfield does not have a “green thumb,” but she does know how to arrange them. “She put all of her energy and mornings into that because you know…flowers don’t talk back. If you put all of your time into then they will grow and be beautiful. They represented renewal for her in a time where she was suffering.” I believe that was a positive way to sum up the movie and great advice for anyone looking for a second chance.
“King’s Faith” will release on April 26th, but only in select theaters. However, that can all change if you demand “King’s Faith” in your city. The only way you can do that is by visiting the official webpage here: http://www.kingsfaith.com and requesting it. You can also check out additional information about the movie and its characters.
