McKinley Freeman is best known for his role as “Derek Roman” on VH-1’s Hit The Floor. This weekend, however, we saw a softer and sweeter side of the seemingly bad boy actor in TVOne’s original holiday movie, Second Chance Christmas. In the film, McKinley is “Malcolm” a celebrity business manager for hot shot basketball player. He falls for Maisie (Robinne Lee), a single mother who is very close to her son and only child, Lawrence (Michael Rainey, Jr.).
Although Maisie and Malcolm seem to have a fairy tale love, his relationship with her son is distant and awkward. The two agree to “coexist” out of their mutual love for Maisie. Lawrence does not want a father, and Malcolm in turn never wanted to be one. They soon find themselves bound by tragedy when Maisie is suddenly killed in a car accident. Lawrence, unable to properly grieve, lashes out at his stepfather and everyone around. Desperate and angry, Malcolm decides to put him up for adoption. Their relationship, however, soon takes a turn for the better after Malcolm gives him pointers on winning over a girl he likes and how to carry himself as a man. Just as all seems well the boy’s social worker calls having found his surviving relatives. Will Malcolm’s new found family be destroyed with the appearance of Lawrence’s lost one?
As aforementioned McKinley, has never been this type of character before. Derek Roman exudes confidence and captivates you with his anti-hero nature. As Malcolm, you forget all about Derek Roman. Malcolm is definitely the good guy. You can tell he always means well despite the outcome of the situation. You really just want to pat him on the back and let him know that God always has a plan even when we cannot understand it. Needless to say this film is a tearjerker and a necessary part of your holiday movie experience. Check your local listings for Second Chance Christmas only on TVOne!
