Meditation for Divas on the Move

Meditation for Divas on the Move

If you’ve ever complained about stress to anyone, you’ve probably heard all about the wonders of meditation. They way it’s described, meditation can just about fix anything for anyone.

We beg to differ.

Some of us are born to keep moving and grooving, and the thought of sitting still and quiet is more stressful than the things in our life that usually cause us grief. It’s important to remember that it isn’t the sitting and being quiet aspect of meditation that matters. It’s the act of unplugging, unwinding, and giving yourself time to reconnect with the most important person in your life: you.

Music as Meditation

Music has many scientifically proven benefits, including increased motivation, easing pain, elevating moods, and reducing stress. So don’t get caught up on the idea of putting yourself through auditory deprivation because your best friend told you it’s crucial for meditation. Put on your favorite songs and unwind.

Musical meditation doesn’t have to be a motionless activity. The act of dancing is a form of emotional expression and stress relief. If you thrive on the energy of others, join a dance class and surround yourself with fellow movers and shakers. That way you get to mentally check out while maintaining socialization. Walking Meditation

If the idea of meditation appeals to you, but the lack of movement and seclusion does not, consider trying walking meditation. Find a beautiful, quiet place to explore while focusing on your breathing and taking time to admire your surroundings. If something catches your eye, pause and consider its role in the world around you.

There are proven benefits to the act of forest bathing, also known as Shinrin-Yoku. Not only does it reduce stress and have a positive impact on your health, walking in a forest or park immerses you in a location you won’t associate with responsibilities at home or work. Assuming of course, that you don’t live or work in a forest.

Creative Practice and Logic Puzzles

Immerse yourself in a calming activity that positively occupies your mind. If you gravitate toward creative practices, schedule time each day to write, read, paint, or draw. If you are a logician at heart, set aside time for doing a Sudoku or a puzzle. The idea is to unplug from the world around you and clear your mind by focusing on your task.

Many of the activities that fuel our left or right side of the brain are not activities that encourage movement. However, it is not really the concept of sitting still in meditation that bothers people, but rather calming the mind. So, while your body may not be moving, your mind is actively de-stressing as you complete your chosen task.

Yoga and Tai Chi

Yoga and Tai Chi are forms of meditation that incorporate movement while calming the mind. While they appear easy, many of the isometric holds also challenge your muscles during your practice. Yoga and Tai Chi are a great way to incorporate exercise and mindfulness at the end of the day without getting your heart rate high enough to interrupt your sleep patterns.

If this still isn’t enough movement, but you like the concept, explore the martial arts. The foundations and discipline follow the same school of thought but take a different approach.

Be You

No matter what you decide to do as a part of your meditation practice, make sure it nourishes your mind, body, and soul. Do something you love and incorporate your unique flair. Just remember, leave work at the door, put your phone on silent, and take time to revel in your awesomeness.
