The name “Hendrix” is synonymous with success in music. That name may evoke thoughts of Jimi, or depending on your generation, perhaps Future. But take a moment to meet this Hendricks, the powerhouse vocalist from East Atlanta. She is storming stages everywhere, singing the story of your life…and her own.
“I want people to know that I sang…with an a”
Hendricks will have you know that she is just a girl, like any other. But she is a girl who also knows where her genius lies. “I want people to know that I sang…with an a”, she states when asked what she wants people to know about her as an artist. She’s telling the truth. Her voice is the kind that has been marinated in the sweet soul of the south. Her tone is robust and her notes are like soft butter.
Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, Hendricks got her start singing in the church choir like so many of her predecessors. She knew that she had something special when her stint landed her a spot up front, belting out solos before the congregation. The confirmation that she received from the choir director during that time was a nudge in the right direction.
The young songstress began honing her skills. She signed up for talent shows at her high school, and fell in love with performing live on stage. And, it was then, that Hendricks knew that it was time to become serious about her calling.
Today, at 26 years old, Hendricks admits that her family spoiled her growing up. But the ATL transplant has paid the dues required to live this dream. She served as president of her high school drama club, and after grinding it out as a background singer for local talent, as well as a run with an Atlanta cover band, her star was finally on the rise. She performed at shows, opening for R&B staples like Carl Thomas and Ruben Studdard. And now, much like her experience in the church, she has been called front and center.
Hendricks has her heart set on bringing back the kind of authentic R&B music that she grew up listening to. Her first official project, a six-song EP titled “Based on a True Story”, is available now on Soundcloud. The music is injected with the very vibes that Hendricks describes when discussing her studio sessions:
“It has to be dark…Jack [Daniels] has to be present…Jack Honey [laughs]”.
Of course, you can expect to hear relatable subject matter on this project. The topics are inspired by her personal experience in love, relationships, and life. The lead single from the EP, No Good, is available for purchase and streaming everywhere. The track was penned by The Exclusives, a group responsible for many chart-topping hits by August Alsina, and other mainstream artists.
As an artist, Hendricks insists on being very hands on with her career. She relies on her talent, no gimmicks. Her mission is simple; breathe life back into Rhythm and Blues. She is not one to be satisfied with single pieces of the puzzle. Her focus is on the bigger picture. She is out to ensure that, when you hear the name “Hendricks” alone, there will be no confusion.
