This young talent, Jasmin Savoy Brown is making a name for herself in Hollywood. From starring in popular series like HBO’s drama, “The Leftovers,” to the drama series “WILL” on TNT, to Netflix’s comedy-drama “Love”, to her most current role, a Shonda Rhimes production, “For the People” on ABC. And that’s just a small list of the projects Jasmin has been apart off.
Jasmin is originally from Springfield, Oregon, but later moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career in the arts. Jasmin’s interest in the arts started when she just four, doing musicals for her church.
From starring in musicals in church as a child, to now working with one of biggest writers in Hollywood, Shonda Rhimes, you can say, Jasmin has come along way. And ironically, Jasmin even guest starred on “Grey’s Anatomy,” another Shonda Rhimes series.
But now she has a leading role on this new Shonda’s project, and she gets to work with her more frequently. She describes working with Shonda as, “Inspiring…I still find myself amazed that I am associated directly with her. When I think of Shonda, I think of a calibre of work that is superb, I think of people who are excellent at what they do and deserve the opportunities she gives them, and I think of compelling stories.”
And speaking of compelling stories, on “For the People” Jasmin plays a lawyer named, “Allison Adams,” which Jasmin talks about working really hard to prepare for the role saying, “A lot of research. I’m still researching. I asked my costars for recommendations on books and podcasts, watched a lot of documentaries and interviews, and listened to some audio books. I am also fortunate to have a real Federal Public Defender in the Southern District of New York who is kind enough to email with me and answers my questions. She is an angel. Truly.”
And good news, the new series, “For the People” has been picked up for a second season, and Jasmin is super excited about the news saying, “I love my cast with all of my heart. I love my character. I love the scripts, the writers, our producers, directors, and crew…am thrilled to get back to work. Our first shoot day can’t come soon enough!” No word on when the second season will premiere, but if you want to watch the first season again, or haven’t seen it yet, it’s available on Hulu and OnDemand.
You can also catch Jasmin on the second season of “Love” on Netflix, where she plays a character name, Annie, who’s a bratty/mean teenage actor.
When Jasmin is not acting, she’s busy being an advocate for meaningful causes like women’s rights and the LGBTQ community. A lot of celebrities get behind causes because it makes them look good, or they feel obligated to, but Jasmin doesn’t feel obligated to, these causes mean a lot to her, “I don’t feel pressure or obligation, because that implies demand, but I do feel a responsibility. I couldn’t go to sleep at night if I wasn’t using my voice and my platform to speak up for others.”
Jasmin understands that her platform and having access to a lot of people, can be super beneficial with trying to create change, and she will not stop until there is. “The only way we will find justice and change in marginalized communities is to NOT GIVE UP. We have to keep fighting. Women’s rights and the rights / fair treatment of the LGBTQ community are important to me because I am a member of those groups, and I know what it means to exist as a queer female. I’m privileged – I do not face any horrible discrimination. But I know others do. And I know my future children will if we do not make a change. Now,” says Jasmin.
So Jasmin is about to start filming season 2 of “For the People,” and she’s working on her debut album. She didn’t spill too much on who she’s working with or what we can expect, but the album will be dropping sometime this year. Also later this year, she’s producing and directing a short film, which she wrote. From acting, to singing, to directing, Jasmin is a triple threat. We all should be keeping a close watch on her career, because the best is yet to come.
