When asked, “What four adjectives would your husband use to describe you?” Tahirah, the short hair beauty, “responded: “powerful, focused, goal-driven, and kind.” With adjectives like that, who wouldn’t want to learn more about this beautiful woman.
I saw Tahirah when I first moved to Atlanta,Ga. It was her haircut and style that caught my attention. Coming from a city where short hair isn’t a strong statement amongst most women, I was ecstatic to see young women rock a cut with a lot of confidence. Many of you have seen her, as she is #haircutgoals or #baldhead for all women looking to go short but need a visual for inspiration. Not only is she inspiration when it comes to hair, but she’s also a mommy, wife, and entrepreneur in the beauty industry. Tahirah has created a platform, which you can follow on IG @wifemotherhustla, where she highlights motivation and tools for other mommies.
As a new mommy, I often struggle with the word BALANCE. And I’m curious to see how other mommies are making things work in their world. It was only right that I reach out to Tahirah, mommy of 3.
Tahirah gave me an inside scoop on balancing motherhood, self-care and moving from Ohio. During our conversation, I enjoyed her transparency and honesty. One of the many things I took from our conversation is that communication with your mate is very important. Prior to them starting a family or even getting married to the love of her life, Tahirah explains that being open about what they each wanted and needed in their relationship has been key!
ME: I asked Tahirah about balance, and how she’s continuing to accomplish so much with their new twin additions.
TAHIRAH: The fact that I’ve traveled, partied and really enjoyed my life early on has been key! I don’t feel I’m craving anything. My husband is very supportive and understands when I need me time or want to attend beauty or style events. My support system is very strong!
To my surprise, I had no idea that Tahirah grew up in a city 1 hrs away from my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio.
ME: Where are you from?
TAHIRAH: Columbus Ohio, I grew up in Ohio and Georgia. I always knew I would leave Ohio. I just felt like I needed to get out of that environment. I saw a lot. From my friends being on drugs and a lot of crime.
ME: What does Self-care look like?
TAHIRAH: Selfcare for me is a high-intensity workout. It gives me the opportunity to not only stay in shape but relieve stress and just focus. Most women enjoy massages or getting their nails done. I’m the total opposite, I prefer activities that will keep me active.
ME: When you found out you were having twins, how did you feel?
TAHIRAH: Twins run in my family, so I wasn’t really shocked. But it’s so much fun and they’re so cute!
ME: Where does your fearlessness come from?
TAHIRAH: I’m actually not fearless, I have social anxiety that stems from being bullied growing up in Ohio. It’s something, I’m working on due to the fact I get invited to a lot of events. Having a cocktail or two helps when I’m at events. I got invited to the Cardi B Fashion nova event in L.A. and they told me, I couldn’t bring a + 1. I had to go alone, I was nervous but that event helped me to step out of my comfort zone. And as the night went on, I became comfortable and enjoyed myself.
I never told anyone about the bullying and how it made me feel. I eventually talked to my mother about it. She really helped me to gain my confidence.
ME: As you know Kontrol Magazine highlights fashion and beauty! What would you say is your fashion aesthetic?
TAHIRAH: I would consider my style to be Tomboy chic mixed with a hint of androgynous. I love that 90’s streetwear vibe, where clothing is oversized.
ME: How long have you been wearing your hair short?
TAHIRAH: I got my haircut when I was 15.
ME: If I was to look in your purse, what are 3 kid items that I would see?
TAHIRAH: I don’t carry a purse. I haven’t carried one for years, if I’m going out you’ll see me with a clutch. I carry a diaper bag and put my items in there. I’ve never really been into handbags. I don’t own any luxury styles like CHANEL.
ME:When it comes to makeup, Do you prefer being BEAT or going natural?
TAHIRAH: I’m a minimalist when it comes to makeup. When I was younger, my father wouldn’t even let me wear lip gloss. I prefer a natural look over wearing a lot of makeup.
ME: What advice do you have for other women who want to step into Mompreneurship?
TAHIRAH: You must have tunnel vision and be willing to remove yourself from situations that aren’t good for you. You have to mentally block out the wants of others and do what’s good for yourself. More importantly, DISCIPLINE is key!!
I would also suggest finding your tribe. A support system is very important.
ME: What’s next for you in the beauty industry?
TAHIRAH: After having the babies and coming back to work, I have a fresh mindset, and I’m more interested in the business of beauty.
After my interview with Tahirah, I felt like I had a new mommy friend that I could do playdates with. Tahirah is not only haircut goals, but I would definitely say a woman you should follow when you want to be inspired when it comes to fitness, hairstyling, and overall mommy inspiration. Being a mommy isn’t easy and at times you need those relationships with other mommies that understand where you’re coming from. “FIND YOUR TRIBE”–
