Award season is in full effect and The 87th Academy Awards are near and while we’re all anticipating some juicy details about who’s wearing what and who’s performing, we’re also finding out some troubling news for Mo’Nique, who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Precious in 2009.
Allegedly, Mo’Nique has been blackballed ever since her role in the award-winning film. In an essay for The Hollywood Reporter, she explained that she had been offered roles in both The Butler and the upcoming Richard Prior biopic and ended up losing out on both roles over time.
“I got a phone call from Lee Daniels,” Mo’Nique wrote. “And he said to me, ‘Mo’Nique, you’ve been blackballed.’ I said, ‘Why?’ And he said, ‘Because you didn’t play the game.’”
Daniels was referring to the fact that Mo’Nique declined to campaign for Best Supporting Actress in the Oscar race when she was nominated. After that, she had only had four small movie roles, one made for TV. The talented actress has also been referred to as “tactless” and “difficult” by Daniels, who issued his own statement toTHR.
“Mo’Nique is a creative force to be reckoned with,” he said. “Her demands throughPrecious were not always in line with the campaign. This soured her relationship with the Hollywood community. I consider her a friend. I have and will always think of her for parts that we can collaborate on, however the consensus among the creative teams and powers thus far were to go another way with these roles.”
Is Mo’Nique officially finished in the business of Hollywood or will she rise from the ashes like the Phoenix we know she is?
