Pittsburgh Steak Salad

Pittsburgh Steak Salad

When I travel to a place that I have never been to before (no matter if it’s a different city, state, or country) it is very important to me that I try the local cuisine of that area. I make it a point to not eat something that I can get at home or that I’ve eaten before.  When you’re visiting a new place for the first time; why not try something that you’ve never had before?!

During my first time in Pittsburgh I noticed that whenever someone would order a salad they had french fries on top. Yes, I said fries! It sounds odd, but it’s pure genius! Pittsburgh is generally known for putting fries on top of their sandwiches (think Primanti Brother’s), but they take it one step further by putting it on top of their salads; which honestly is one of the best ideas ever!

The salads are usually made with iceberg lettuce, chicken or steak, onions, cheese, and ranch dressing.  Once the hot french fries hit the salad they start to melt the cheese and wilt the lettuce and it’s just about the best bite you could ever ask for!

I couldn’t get enough of this salad and had to re-create my own version at home. I put my own spin on it and I use the thin-sliced beef steaks (the same meat you would use if you were making a Philly cheese steak). You can either buy the pre-packaged beef steak or you can ask your butcher to thinly slice a beef steak for you.   My version of this salad is packed with tons of flavor and cheese (two of my favorite things).  Enjoy making my Pittsburgh Steak Salad!

INGREDIENTS:

1 lb. beef steak, thinly sliced

**2 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

1 tbsp Worcheister sauce

1.5 tsp black pepper

salt to taste

1 medium sized onion, sliced

1 pre-packaged bag of either iceberg or romaine salad (i usually use a mix of the two)

1 cup of mozzarella cheese

2.5 cups french fries, fried

Ranch dressing

**If you are using the pre-packaged beef steaks, you can skip on the oil because the steaks produce a A LOT of oil once they start cooking

DIRECTIONS:

1.  In a medium sized skillet, heat the skillet and olive oil over medium to high heat. Once the pan is hot add in your onions and cook until they start to caramelize and turn brown.

2. Add the beef slices to the skillet. Cook for 2 minutes and then add the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and worcheister sauce. Continue to cook the beef, stirring consistently for another 2 minutes.

3. Pour the salad into a medium-sized bowl. Top the salad with the beef steak, mozzarella cheese, and french fries. Add ranch dressing to your liking and toss all together. ENJOY!
