Legendary, iconic, inspirational, and beautiful. These are the attributes that immediately come to mind when you think of Robin Givens. For over thirty years she has taken the entertainment industry by storm as an actress in some of those most amazing roles and films you can think of.
Robin is warm, sophisticated, personable, and dearly loved by millions of people worldwide. There is much to say about a woman with a career spanning a lifetime, but one thing you can never do is count her out. After a few years away from the limelight she is back with new “Ambitions.” “I’ve been gone for a little while, but I’m back and excited to work, and even more excited about all of the good things coming up for me…”
Most of us grew up watching Robin on television and in films like Head of The Class, Boomerang, The Women of Brewster’s Place, A Rage in Harlem, Blankman, The Family That Preys, and many more. These roles, engraved in our minds, are near and dear to our hearts. “I’ve had an amazing body of work of which I’m very proud of and honored by…a number of roles were groundbreaking and some big ‘firsts’ for television like ‘The Women of Brewster’s Place,’ where they showed the first black lesbian couple on TV, or on Boomerang as “Jacqueline [Broyer]” a high level black female executive of a company who played by her own rules and took control of her sexuality…People tell me a lot of times how they’ve seen my films or might quote a line or two from them and it just really feels great.”
We definitely are fans of Robin’s older work, but her newer roles are just as riveting and amazing. After taking some time off to take care of her children and be the full time mother they needed, the nest is empty, and “mama” is now back to work! This new work includes a recurring role on The CW’s hit series, Riverdale, where she appears as “Sierra McCoy,” an attorney and former mayor of the troubled hamlet, and the mother of “Josie McCoy” (Ashleigh Murray) of the famed Josie & The Pussycats. Robin loves being Sierra and is hoping to continue making appearances on the series and its spinoff, Kathy Keane. “I love the show [Riverdale] and everyone associated with it. The cast is full of young, talented actors and the crew is so warm and friendly…those kids really keep you on your toes with everything they are doing, especially Lili Reinhart, she plays ‘Betty Cooper,’ and she’s just an amazing young woman…I’m definitely hoping to make some appearances on ‘Kathy Keane.’ The show is set on a time jump after Josie has graduated from high school and is attending a performing arts school, so her mom needs to be coming for a visit to check on her baby [she laughs]…” Recently, however, the cast of Riverdale was dealt a tragic blow with the untimely demise of Luke Perry (“Fred Andrews”). As you may recall, Luke suffered a massive stroke and passed a few days thereafter. Robin recalls very fond memories of him: “He was just the most amazing, and kind, and respectful man. A lot of time we would go to lunch, walk arm in arm, talk about our kids, and come bother each other on set. I’m really going to miss him, but his legacy is intact through his work, children, and the lives he’s touched…I’m really going to miss him.”
Riverdale has definitely introduced Robin to a new generation of viewers, but her more scandalous project, OWN’s Ambitions has audiences everywhere raving! Here she portrays Stephanie Carlisle-Lancaster, a high power attorney, and the wife of Atlanta’s mayor. Stephanie is intelligent, beautiful, commanding, seductive and most of all cunning. She will stop at nothing to gain more power and fuel her “Ambitions.” “She’s [Stephanie] a woman who knows what she wants, how to get, and won’t stop for anyone to get what she needs. She’s also confident, assertive, and intelligent so there’s a lot to like about her. It’s just the way she goes about accomplishing her goals is what would give you a reason to pause.” Ambitions recently wrapped its first season and been met with rave reviews. The series is full of plot twists and pitfalls for all of its characters that you never really see coming. You can catch Ambitions only on OWN. Check your local listings for showtimes.
Robin Givens is an ageless beauty. She is the type of woman who gives girls in their twenties a true run for their money. To say her “Black Don’t Crack” is an understatement of the century. We will just put her in line with Angela Bassett. “You know I wish I could tell you I had some secret [she laughs], but honestly God’s just been good to me and I’m big on self-care and grooming. You know moisturizing, drinking water, getting rest, nothing big at all.” Clearly the old ways are what’s working for Robin. Needless to Ms. Givens is a trailblazer and as the new school of critics would say, “the best to ever do it.” You were missed Robin, welcome back!
