September is Self-Care Awareness Month

September is Self-care Awareness Month. Self-care as it relates back to personal style and beauty is something that I haven’t talked about directly at Kontrol. It’s mainly suggested through the use of clean beauty products and easily executed tips on personal style. However, self-care is so much more than what’s in your closet or what’s on your face. I speak from personal experience when I say that having good self-care practices can open the door for many other positive things to manifest in other areas of your life.

Self-care is defined by the Selfcarefederation.org as the following.

Self-care is the practice of individuals looking after their own health using the knowledge and information available to them. It is a decision-making process that empowers individuals to look after their own health efficiently and conveniently, in collaboration with health and social care professionals as needed. Self-care awareness month was founded by Evolve to Live to raise awareness of the numerous benefits of maintain proper individual self-care practices. September was declared Self-Care Awareness Month officially by the Registrar at National Day Calendar in 2017. Below are 5 ways that you can do to practice self-care.


Going to the Doctor

This one goes out to my caretakers and the people the generous hearts. You can be a better help when you’re at your best. Not to mention, your life is valuable too. Be sure to give yourself some of the love you spread to those around you.

Getting Rest

While being able to multi-task or juggle multiple roles seemingly simultaneously is a gift that some people have, it’s important to be get the proper amount of rest.

Going to see a Therapist/Counselor

Sometimes the best thing we can do is talk to someone. Mental health varies from person to person, and we all come with our own differences. Seeking counsel from a licensed and certified mental health professional is an excellent way to practice self-care. You can use sites like Psychologytoday.com or MentalHealthMatch.com to help you locate a mental health professional near you. If the cost of finding mental health care is a concern for you, you should check with your job. Many jobs will offer assistance or pay for a certain amount of counseling sessions at no cost to the employee (you).

Eating Healthier

I once heard I wise person say, “you are what you eat.” If you have questions about making healthier choices in what you eat you can talk to a trainer or dietician. Keep in mind that physical beauty isn’t about body-size. Eating healthier isn’t about weight, its about making better decisions in what we eat to avoid things that would have adverse effects on our health.
