She Got Next: Bri Steves Hip Hop’s new “IT” girl

Unless you’ve been under a rock or on another planet chances are at some point during this past summer/ fall you heard Bri Steves “Jealousy” heating up the airwaves. Don’t even get me started on her grimy flow and fire laced verses in “Late Night”. The talented Philly rapper is having an amazing year thanks to her gritty bars and contralto which grabs your attention and then stays there. She is a breath of fresh air in the female hip hop arena, poised to stand alongside such heavyweights at Missy Elliot, Mc Lyte, and Foxxy Brown. I had the opportunity to sit down with the cocoa skinned beauty backstage while she was on tour with H.E.R. as they stopped in Atlanta. The house was packed with beautiful black women from all dynamics. After her set I was led to her dressing room where I was greeted with a dazzling smile and a warm hug.

DArtagnan: Congratulation on the tour and thank you for allowing Kontrol to be a part of your experience. My first question is do you feel you have arrived?
Bri: Yes and no. I feel like I have a long way to go to get where I want to be career wise. I feel yes, because here I am opening up for H.E.R. and I have a lot of accolades under my belt so far and being on this tour is a big help.
DArtagnan: What’s your favorite song to perform?
Bri: My favorite song to perform is Jealousy, that’s the single. It’s super fun and high energy.
DArtagnan: What are your aspirations for the next five years?
Bri: Aspirations will have to be, one start touring and making a hundred million dollars on tour. You know be a household name, build a brand, definitely getting in TV. Acting more and hopefully in five years dropping projects that allow my fans to grow along with me.
DArtagnan: Walk me through the process of how things have gone for you since Kendrick brought you up on stage this past summer.
Bri: Not a whole bunch has changed, wait I can’t say that there have been some changes. I just came off an Eastern HBCU tour with Atlantic Access Granted. That definitely was a defining moment in sculpting me to be ready for this tour that I’m on now and putting me in different rooms and markets with different people opening doors.
DArtagnan: What sacrifices have you made to bring you to this point?
Bri: I’ve sacrificed sleep, personal down time, um relationships, even relationships with friends and family, but mostly sleep and down time.
DArtagnan: You’re in good company mostly every celebrity that I talk to says sleep and relationships, so you’re on the right path. What’s your biggest phobia?
Bri: It would have to be falling on stage. I guess.
DArtagnan: Who would you like to do a duet with?
Bri: H.E.R.
DArtagnan: When is your next single coming out?
Bri: The next single is…… I kinda wish I could talk about it, but I’m not allowed to cause it has a really cool feature on it. But the next single should be coming soon.
