After 25 years of the most legendary and iconic partnership with New York City’s staple radio station Hot 97, Angie Martinez announced her resignation. Wednesday afternoon while on air Angie gave the world the most shocking news to be heard in Hip-Hop all year. Many people were taken aback by the news, and mixed reactions were cast out into the social media atmosphere. From shock, and dismay, reverence for her work and legacy, and genuine support, Angie’s news was received with mostly positive vibes.
On Instagram Martinez posted a picture with the quote, “Life has to move forward. Everything has its time and everything ends”. She captioned the picture by saying,
“Today I resigned from HOT97. I am grateful to the Emmis family for my time with the company and the immeasurable way that it has shaped my life. We made history together in so many ways and I will cherish those memories and my friendships forever. This was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make but ultimately it is time to move on, to grow and to be challenged in new ways. Saying goodbye is always emotional and bitter sweet but I am extremely excited about the future. Thank you HOT97 and most importantly….the listeners… for an unimaginable journey. Today will be my last show stay tuned…. Love, angie”
Twitter was buzzing with well wishes to Angie from notable celebrities, and artist, as well as career long fans. With the news of her resignation, inquiring minds wanted to know what was next for ‘The Voice of New York’. After a 17 hour silence, it was finally announced that Angie would join Clear Channel Media and Entertainment’s Power 105.1 in New York City, as well as Miami’s The Beat 103.5. After 25 long years, Angie Martinez will finally be syndicated, an accomplishment that is long over due for the radio veteran.
With notable interviews under her belt with legendary figures such as Barack Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Spike Lee, Tu-Pac Jay-Z, Kanye West and many more, Martinez is definitely an invaluable asset to the Power 105.1 family.
In addition to the bitter sweet taste of both a major loss by Hot97, and a major gain for Power 105.1, there has been some light boasting from Power 105.1’s Dj Envy. Yesterday he posted a picture on his Instagram that said “lights out”. The post garnered a reaction from the notorious Funk Master Flex, one of the last original DJ and show hosts of the network. One air Flex called upon his colleagues asking them if they planned on leaving, and if they thought he was going anywhere. Though he fed his listeners the embers of a potential rivalry between he and Angie, he made it clear early on that Martinez was a life long friend, and that nothing would change that.
This is not the first time that Hot97 has lost a mainstay to Power 105.1. All these changes makes one wonder what’s going on behind the scenes at the station? What does this epic loss mean for the station? Will they be able to sustain themselves, and maintain their audience? I personally have not listened to the network since its ‘Star and Bucwild’ days. Could Hot97’s lights really be going out? In the words of Charlemagne The God, there is definitely a “new world order” to the radio game!
