Steve Harvey is known for his exceptional comedic skill, raw and inspiring authorship, and his talent as a host on his talkshow and various other things, but last night, he added the title “first host to flub the Miss Universe winner” to his resume!
All was going as it should be up until the announcement of the winner. Harvey announced Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo, as the winner. As she embraced her win with her crown and beautiful bouquet of flowers, Harvey realized his major faux pas. Miss Columbia was actually the first runner-up, and the true winner was Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurzbach.
Upon realizing, Harvey announced that he indeed made a mistake and apologized to everyone. Last year’s winner removed the crown from Miss Columbia, and re-crowned the true winner, Pia Alonzo Wurzbach. Stunned and happy Wurzbach took her place on center stage.
Harvey accepted responsibility and apologized wholeheartedly, stating it was that it was a human error. Wurzbach took it all in stride and was viewed laughing and smiling discussing how unorthodox of a crowning moment. The Miss Universe organization did later release a statement of apology for the mix-up.
One thing is for sure, this moment will go down in the Miss Universe Pageant history!
