Songstress, activist and fashionista Janelle Monae stays true to her signature black and white look during Paris Fashion Week. While she has moved on from 2-piece suits, she now dabbles in dresses and skirts that give her a more feminine touch. There is no print that is too abstract for the artist and she is definitely not afraid to be bold with solids. Janelle’s style has evolved so much over the years. She was often criticized for wearing suits and a bouffant, the attire that soon became known as her uniform. In 2012, while accepting an award for Black Girls Rock, Janelle responded to the critics by telling the story of why she wears black and white.
“When I started my musical career, I was a maid. I used to clean houses. My parents– my mother was a proud janitor, my step-father who raised me like his very own worked at the post office and my father was a trash man. They all wore uniforms. And that’s why I stand here today in my black and white and I wear my uniform to honor them.”
Janelle looked outstanding in her monochrome wardrobe, styled by Maeve Reilly. With all of the glitz and glam of Paris Fashion Week, Janelle continues to pay homage to her parents by wearing black and white with an occasional pop of color. Take a look at her fashionable moments during Paris Fashion Week. Which look is your favorite?
