It’s been a year since stylist Matthew Henson, left his job at Complex Magazine to branch out for himself. He’s the former Fashion Editor at the New-York based, pop culture magazine, where he regular styled people like Drake, Big Sean, Nicki Minaj, Wale, and J. Cole for features and highly coveted covers. Since walking away from the position has secured artists like A$AP Rocky and The Weeknd as his clients, while continuing to work with major fashion brands.
The 32-year-old grew up in a family that worked in a medical field. Even though his parents support him, they still don’t completely understand what exactly he does. It’s understandable since many creative entrepreneurs have a hard time explaining exactly what they do to their parents. Usually, after a couple of steady checks start coming in parents tend to relinquish their need to know about their children’s occupation. As long as they can determine that money isn’t from drugs or illegal activity; it’s all good.
Matthew started out in the fashion industry at Seventh House PR. He worked as an intern while holding down a job in hospitality. Often using sick days, vacation days, and false truths to continue with the internship. He went on to intern at Flaunt Magazine, where he was eventually promoted to Fashion Editor. Matthew later left his job at Flaunt to become the Fashion Editor at Complex Magazine. A position that he held for 6 years.
While at Complex, Matthew met with A$AP Rocky for the first time, styling him for a shoot with the magazine. However, A$AP was displeased with the selections. So the next time he was assigned to style him, he decided to step his game all the way up and managed to impress A$AP. This resulted in a trusting relationship, where A$AP regularly calls upon Matthew to style him for ad campaigns, appearances, even sitting front row at fashion shows.
A$AP has gone on to release his own clothing line, teaming up with fashion designer Raf Simons to produce the collection. Raf is currently the Creative Director for Calvin Klein, after resigning from the same position at the French couture label, Christian Dior. Last year A$AP collaborated with Guess to produce a collection of 90s inspired clothing. The collection was referred to a GUE$$ and consisted of a lot of white denim, bathing suits, t-shirt dresses, and other Summertime apparel.
The Weeknd has also acquired a new clothing brand, XO. This year he collaborated with H&M to promote the brand. He also embarked on a partnership with popular shoe and apparel company, Puma, last year. The popularity of his latest single “Starboy” has resulted in the “Starboy: Limited Capsule” collection. The Weeknd has been hosting pop-up shops in several retail stores that carry Puma to promote the merchandise.
You can imagine that since Matthew has a hand in both A$AP and Weeknd’s style he also gets a say in their collections and fashion deals. Outside of music artists, Matthew has worked with popular brands like Los Angele’s Stampd, denim company DL1961, and Nike. Since becoming a full-time stylist, he’s had a lot of success. However, this is just the beginning for Matthew. The story is far from completion or a happy ending.
