Taylor Swift has been reaping the benefits of her platinum album 1989, and enjoying life as a young pop icon. But we are sad to announce that all of those great accomplishments may mean far less right now. Taylor announced that her mother, Andrea Finlay, has been diagnosed with cancer.
Taylor made the announcement Thursday via Tumblr. Finlay, 57 was encouraged by her children, Taylor and Austin, to go get a screening for any health issues. Finlay, who was reluctant to go because she felt perfectly fine but did it to please her children, is probably happy she listened as the doctor caught it before things could’ve gotten out of hand.
“For Christmas this year, I asked my mom that one of her gifts to me be her going to the doctor to get screened for any health issues, just to ease some worries of mine. She agreed, and went in to get checked. There were no red flags and she felt perfectly fine, but she did it just to get me and my brother off her case about it.
The results came in, and I’m saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer. I’d like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know.”
She also said her mother wanted to put this news out in hopes that other children will encourage their parents to take time out of their busy lives being providers and caregivers to do the same and protect their health and well-being no matter how good they feel. The 25-year-old pop star also closed out her letter saying, “Thank you for caring about my family so much that she would want me to share this information with you. I hope and pray that you never get news like this.”
It is very unfortunate for anyone to go through such a painful and scary disease as merciless as cancer, but we hope that the doctors caught it in just enough time to ease the battle. Our prayers go out to Taylor Swift, her mother Andrea, and anyone who is out there fighting cancer. Stay strong and keep fighting.
