For all of the naysayers who thought Toni Braxton’s career was over when she announced that she was retiring think again. The singer came back home to Atlanta Saturday confirming that she’s still got it. She opened with “Let Me Count the Ways” in a long cascading coral dress which flowed with perfection despite the rainy weather that evening. “Alright Atlanta, I’m home. I need you to show me some love,” she said exciting fans. Supported by her sisters Trina and Towanda singing backup and dancing like their lives depended on it, it was an evening of love for Toni.
Covering most of her hits, she even took requests from the audience which included “Spanish Guitar.” Singing “Let it Flow,” she shared that it was Whitney Houston’s favorite song of hers. Performing a remake of the Isley Brothers classic “Between the Sheets” she flipped it rapping Biggie’s verses in “Big Poppa” and even gave us a Lil’ Kim “What What.”
With numerous wardrobe changes devoid of wardrobe malfunctions that took place a few weeks ago during a performance in New Brunswick, New Jersey she showed out working dresses that had slits almost to her waistline. Think Grammy Awards 2001 when she wore that barely there white satin dressed that left little to the imagination. The songstress sounded amazing, despite being told by her doctors that her performance days were over. “I have Lupus…Today is a good day,” she said.
One of the most emotional songs was “How Could an Angel Break My Heart” which Toni sang with passion. During the finale, Toni mesmerized in a white one sleeved dress singing what most of the fans, including myself had waited for the entire night: “Unbreak My Heart.” Toni and Babyface have reunited for their current single “Hurt You” which is Toni’s first studio album in 3 years.
