Every season has its highlights. For Spring it is blooming flowers, for Summer its blockbuster movies and vacations, for Winter its the family holidays and presents; but for Fall its all about what debuts on television! Thankfully, and surprisingly, Fall 2014 has delivered a slew of new and thrilling shows that will rule your time and push your DVR into overtime hours. After watching so much television that I might as well be a “Walking Dead” zombie here are our four top picks for the shows you must see!
#4 ABC’s “black-ish.” This new comedy starring Anthony Anderson, Lawrence Fishburne, and Tracee Ellis Ross has quickly become the number one comedy in the country. It hilariously details the experiences of a black family living in mostly white suburbia and the effects of what happens when you’re “the token.” Whoever said the family sitcom was dead definitely never green lit a show like this. We are glad to see Anthony and Tracee back on television. Let’s just hope Tracee does not bail on this gig like she did “Reid Between The Lines;” that was a sin that did that show in!
#3 Fox’s “Red Band Society.” Lookout “Glee” there are a new batch of funny kids in realistic situations and they don’t have to sing to get their point across. However, they do all live in the pediatric ward of hospital. Oddly enough this dark comedy/dramatic comedy, as they call it, is surprisingly good. Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer returns to television as a strong handed nurse who must keep a group of sick kids out of trouble, all the while allowing them to be as free and normal as possible. The kids call their group “The Red Band Society,” based on red emergency room ID bracelets given to their founder, Leo, during his many surgeries and battles with cancer. This is one of those shows that will make you laugh and cry and all the while entertain you.
#2 Fox’s “Gotham.” The origin stories of Batman, his allies, and his twisted villains are showcased in this televised adaptation of The Dark Knight mythos. Told primarily from rookie detective Jim Gordon’s point of view, you truly see why Gotham City needs Batman. Even more interesting is how it unwittingly created the hero through a series of events. No, Bruce Wayne will not be donning cape and cowl to save the day just yet; so sit back and be terrified as you watch corrupt cops, crime lords, and wicked officials cultivate the populace into the criminal masterminds of the future. However, Jada Pinkett-Smith as “Fish Mooney,” a character made solely for this show is the real star to see. Let’s just say Jada is really, REALLY good at being VERY bad.
#1 ABC’s “How To Get Away With Murder.” Shonda Rhimes has done it again. By done it again I mean delivered us a show that all of America will pause to watch every Thursday night. Sorry Olivia Pope you have been dethroned, it is all about Annalise Keating now. Played by Academy Award nominee, Viola Davis, is a stellar defense attorney who through intricately masterminded legal and illegal maneuvers manages to get her guilty clients free of murder charges. She is backed by five promising law students eager to be apart of her firm; Wes, Laurel, Michaela, Asher, and Connor. Of these students, “Wes (Alfred Enoch)” is the star to watch. He has a few deadly secrets of his own apparently!
There you have it, the four shows to make your Fall fulfilling! Be sure to check your local listing for air dates and times. Then be sure your DVR is set! You definitely don’t want to miss out on any of these hit shows. Remember if they don’t make it past mid-season cancellations it’s your fault for not watching!
