Transformation Tuesday: Onika Maraj to Nicki Minaj

Transformation Tuesday: Onika Maraj to Nicki Minaj

Onika Maraj made her claim to fame with the success of 3 mixtapes Playtime Is Over, Sucka Free, and Beam Me Up Scotty. For a short period, she signed with Brooklyn group Full Force. After signing with Full Force, Onika, along with Lou$tar, Scaff Beezy, and 7even Up formed a group named “Hoodstars.” In 2004 the group recorded the entrance song for WWE Diva Victoria titled “Don’t Mess With,” it was featured on the compilation album Theme Addict: WWE The Music, Vol. 6. They were unsuccessful so Onika exited the group. At the time, she was managed by Debra Antney, the manager and mother of rap artist Wacka Flocka. Primarily she became Nicki Maraj but later changed it to Nicki Minaj after meeting Fendi, CEO of the Brooklyn label Dirty Money Entertainment. He changed it when he met her due to her atrocious rap flow. She was known for “eating” female rappers. While signed to Dirty Money Entertainment, Nicki appeared on the prevalent urban DVD “The Come Up Volume 11” that spotlighted innovative rappers from New York. After her appearance on The Come Up DVD, she was discovered by Lil Wayne and was signed to Young Money Entertainment in August 2009.

Since she hit the mainstream music scene, Nicki has been a hot fashion topic globally. The fashion diva can been seen in any hair color ranging from black to green. Minaj has been very influential with the fashion industry and her creative style can be seen duplicated all over the world. Her style is so impressive that she was once invited to sit alongside Anna Wintour, Vogue Editor-In-Chief, at New York Fashion Week! Transforming from the girl next door to fashion weirdo to fashion icon, Nicki’s style is unique and keeps fashionistas wondering what is next for the diva to wear. I look forward to seeing where the fashion evolution takes her in the future. Kela B.
