Trinidad James has a clever way of remaining relevant in the music industry. What is his secret? Being himself. With the immediate success of his single “All Gold Everything” his life changed very quickly. The song was originally on his mixtape and then re-released earlier this year on his debut album Don’t Be S.A.F.E. (Sensitive As F— Everyday). The Trinidadian-born rapper can still be spotted wearing gold, but he stays true to what he feels in each and every moment he breathes.
Last month, Trinidad who is the CEO of Gold Gang Records backed by Def Jam held a listening party at Wish in Little 5 Points in Atlanta for his mixtape 10 PC Mild. The name comes from his favorite item on the menu at American Deli, who he says has the best wings. He orders all flats and light sauce!
Wearing round retro shades, and a wild afro he manages to create a style that is authentic. He takes bits and pieces from the past and blends it with what is current. Wearing socks with a caricature of himself on them with Nike kicks, the look wouldn’t be complete without a few gold chains and rings for good measure.
DJ Genesis, the newest member of The Academy who is currently on tour with Trinidad was on the ones and twos providing a tantalizing taste of the mixtape. Host Fort Knox kept the energy level HEAVEE HEAVEE HEAVEE with a steady flow of excitement. Two-9 was in the building showing their support with along with a crowd packed with a myriad of artists.
Today, Trinidad celebrates his birthday in Paris while on his European tour. Just a year and some months ago he was living a regular life. “All Gold Everything,” the joint that went viral and then to the top of the charts was recorded in a closet. Not bad for a guy with just a love for music. For anyone who challenges the rapper’s talent, please do not make the error in an unfavorable judgment.
From the first time I saw the “All Gold Everything” video I knew he was going to blow. I had to literally stop what I was doing to watch it. He was different, but it was his confidence that was most alluring. That song was nothing compared to what his album and mixtape have to offer. I’m extremely inspired by artists who don’t care what other people think, follow their gut and make their dreams a reality. The Trini-Gladiator is the dream. Like it, or love it.
