Tyler, The Creator from the group Odd Future recently came out on Tumblr with a photo of him in a white t-shirt holding hands with a white male. Was Tyler support gay pride? I think not. The shirt reads, “Golf Pride World Wide,” with a symbol of an Iron Cross and the gay pride colors blended together.
This symbol is controversial for many reasons.
Let me give you a breakdown. Adolf Hitler used the Iron Cross starting in 1939 as a Nazi representation. The Nazi’s were a representation of white supremacy and oppression for the Jewish people. Tyler, The Creator used this symbol on his shirt and blended the gay pride symbol. The gay pride symbol of colors or the Rainbow Flag, is a representation of the LGBTQIQ community and represents hope and peace. This act by Tyler is not only disrespecting but, unacceptable.
Tyler, The Creator in his album Goblin used the derogatory word, faggot (a hateful word used to talk about homosexuals) 213 times.
He defended himself saying that he does not hate gay people and that the word is well… just a word. But, if it is truly just a word…why bother put it in use? The history behind the word and the symbol of the Iron Cross alone should discourage anyone for attempting to use the word in their vernacular or play around with the symbol like a game.
Fashion is an artistic way of expression. However, this shirt represents confusion and its downright childish.
