The young actress/singer, Selena Gomez, is catching a lot of heat from Hindi groups for wearing a bindi at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday. “The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance,” Rajan Zed, leader of the Universal Society of Hinduism, explained to WENN. Gomez wore the Hindu symbol on her forehead during her “Come and Get It” performance at the show, which received rave reviews from various celebrities. Her performance and outfit was Bollywood inspired. Furthermore, it was noted by the Times of India that the inspiration behind the bindi came from the Punjabi lyrics and tabla beat, which can be heard in the background. Hindu groups are furious and demanding an apology from Gomez. “It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed.” They also suggest that she should become acquainted with world religions.
