Growing up in Moorestown, New Jersey, Bethany AKA Queen B was not exposed to the world of fashion and extreme hairstyling. Her desire was to go to fashion school and she was accepted to F.I.T. in Manhattan. But with being young and a senior in high school Bethany’s wants kept changing to being a fashion designer, cosmetic surgeon or interior decorator. Bethany’s mom encouraged her to attend Rizzieri Aveda School. It was a a 9 ½ month program and would help her pay her way through college.
After hair school, Bethany got degree in business while working in a salon. About 3 years into her career, she started to experiment and play around with photo shoots, that’s when Bethany turned into Queen B. Queen B is more of Bethany’s expressive self, the avant garde side of hair dressing. This is where it all began!
Kontrol: When did you fall in love with doing hair?
Queen B: I didn’t fall in love with hair until I started to play around with it. Doing hair came natural, the passion for hair didn’t come about until I could create amazing things. The more creative and innovative…I could get lost in building a piece, time goes by and it doesn’t even phase you that’s when you know you’re in love with what you’re doing.
Kontrol: How did you meet your mentors Derek J and Terrance Davidson? What advice have they given you?
Queen B: I meet them on the show (Hair Battle Spectacular) Derek was the judge during our 5 weeks and Terrance was a guest judge and made quite and impression on me. After the show we had been in touch, we collaborate on things. ( On May 5th, Queen B. will serve as a beauty expert alongside her mentor, award-winning hair stylist, Terrence Davidson at his coveted ‘My Story, My Way’ Tour in Atlanta, GA.) They’ve given me basic advice about the industry, take care about your brand. Most importantly be you.
Kontrol: What love/hate about being on reality TV?
Queen B: I loved the overall experience, learning new techniques, skill set to use in my career. The hardest thing was going back to your regular life…I came back and people that I thought would support me started treating me different. They felt like I had a sense of entitlement but I had to do interviews and photo shoots. I ended up having to move back home one month before the show aired. I lost 2 really good friends within a month of being home.
Besides doing hair, this 26 yr. old is busy with her company QB & Company, an on-location beauty entity based in Philadelphia specializing in crafting beauty on the outside as well as from within, serving the tri-state area. Bethany also created the La Femme Hair Exhibition Organization in 2009. The purpose of this organization is to hold events that feature hair, makeup, and fashion as art forms; while raising money to benefit the autism.
Bethany has done hair for Ashanti, Charli Baltimore, Madonna Black, and many more. The person she wants to work with the most?!?! Nicki Minaj I’m sure that this is a goal that will be accomplished.
