Like mother, like daughter! Apples surely don’t fall too far from the tree and whose would be more interesting to pick and observe than that of the famous 80’s glam style icon Betsey Johnson and her daughter, Lulu? Whosever idea it was to pitch their reality series entitled “XOXO Betsey” is a genius – just seeing these two together conjures a barrage of questions! There’s no business like family business and mothers and daughters are always an irresistible oddity – so these two together should be make TV magic!
The show highlights a hilarious, intimate and sometimes insane mother-daughter dynamic as Betsey relaunches her 35-year-old line after filing for bankruptcy last spring and Lulu struggles to get her nascent label, Lulu Johnson, off the ground.
Sitting around the big marble table in Lulu’s upper East Side apartment, the two are a study in contrast. Betsey is small and sprightly at 70, in leggings, a punky T-shirt and sneakers, with bright-red lipstick and her hair in stick-straight blond extensions. Lulu is elegant at 38, tall and voluptuous, with long, wavy, honey-colored hair, understated makeup and sweats.
They’re an odd couple — a match only made more incongruous by their close proximity: Betsey lives right above Lulu’s apartment.
Betsey moved in about three years ago to spend more time with her granddaughters Ella, 5, and Layla, 7. The two designers are still coming to terms with what it means to be neighbors.
On the first episode, tensions rise when Betsey repeatedly enters Lulu’s place without knocking. When Lulu confronts her, Betsey crawls under the marble dining table to escape. Interestingly, she finds the underside of the table also functions as Ella and Layla’s canvas. Lulu lets them draw in crayon on the expensive furniture to help them express their creativity.
